Sample Training Plans

Appropriate Training Plans will always depend on the current ability and aspiration of the individual runner.

A typical training plan start around 12 weeks before a given race, for a marathon a bit more. Below you’ll find some good and publicly available training plans for various distances and abilities, developed by Mike Gratton, the 1983 winner of the London Marathon. Be sure also to read the Training Plan notes.


  • 5K Training Plan – 8 weeks – Mike Gratton
