Captains Report

Hi All ,

Well, 2001 got off to a good start.  The presentation evening way back in January was a good night by all accounts and very much enjoyed by all, with the exception of myself ( I was having a ball Down Under).  We also had an excellent turn out for the Wokingham Half.  But from then on in things have gradually gone down hill! I refer to the foot and mouth crisis, of course.

The crisis really has called a halt to all races.  It began with the big one, Bramley, then the Tough Ten and The Fleet Half.  And ironically, for the first time in years (I was spurred on by the change in championship rules), I had entered for all three! I was
so sad when they were cancelled!

Typically, now the clocks have leapt forward and Spring's here again, we find ourselves in the unfortunate situation of having nowhere to go.  For the time being Summer Training will remain at Lightwater, taking place on Tuesdays, and    Windlesham on Thursdays.  We will probably have to run on the road, although as from today, Sunday 1st April, Chobham is now open, so there is an alternative. Please refer to the website for any changes of venues or call the committee members for advice.  If there are any new venues you would like to try out, please let us know.

Despite all the problems, the ladies continue to go from strength to strength.  Well done to all of you who, come rain or shine, are raring to go every week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and      Sundays.  Welcome also to our latest recruit, Brenda.  She ran with us for the first time last Tuesday, has the application form to complete and will be back for more!

As I write this it is exactly a week until the Paris Marathon - so good luck to Ginni, Karen, Tony and Phil. Hope all your hard work and dedication pays off next week.  All the time spent pounding the streets with the voice inside your heads    saying "Just why, exactly, am I doing this to myself?" will just fade away as you cross that finish line.  It will all be worth it Ginni and Karen, honest!  Enjoy your first marathon yooz two!! Commiserations to Dave and Les, who have had to pull out (the things you'll do for some French wine, Ricards!).

Then it's the London on the 22nd--. Good luck and best wishes go to everyone who has trained so hard, especially to all the ladies, of course, and also to the first timers Chris, Janice, Angela and Jenny.  ENJOY! Chris P, Bob Webb and myself will be among the many cheering you all on, so please let me know the results on your return.

One race that did go ahead despite the foot-and-mouth was the Kingston Breakfast run on 1st April.

Well done to Wendy and Janice on completing the 14 miles and to Ginni, Karen and Chris on your 7 miles - hangover and all!

Well that's it.  Look forward to running with you all during our (hopefully) brilliant summer.

Yours Pam B.

Runners World Training Camp
8th - 18th March 2001
The Algarve, Portugal

Thursday 8th March
Up at 4am for early flight (0640), which means a full day in Portugal. Felt strange wading through disinfectant at airport (Foot & Mouth precaution) See lots of familiar faces on flight and at Faro airport.
Picked up hire car - drew straws for driver!
Got lost on way to apartment - signposts severely lacking! but found apartment in time to catch lunch at the Neptune Bar - wonderful chicken sandwich and fab coffee.
Dumped cases in apartment and headed off for easy run. Everyone tired from work and flight - so was hard, easy run. Ran past ostrich farm!
Quick shower and meet up with Phil and Sarah (from last year) and head off for pizza and red wine.
Sleep well and wake up to mixed weather - sunshine and showers.

Friday 9th March
Meet at 8am for morning run. Beautiful run along cliff tops with views all the way to Villamoura. (beats the A30!)
Back to apartment for shower and breakfast, then pack rucksacks and head off to explore on foot. Find a great supermarket with wonderful fruit (already planning tomorrows breakfast!) and a good sports shop. Head back to Falesia for early lunch and then back to apartment to read book through eyelids!
Track session is scheduled for 4pm, Angela is  terrified!
After a warm up we are split into groups for mile time trials. Wendy tells us we have to run as fast as we can for 4 laps "eyeballs out" and that we can't talk. Well, where's the fun in that?
Anyway, we give it a go and manage a mile in 7.03 (Angela 7.02). We are dead chuffed, until they tell us that we have got to do it again, twice! but 10 seconds a lap slower than last time. We manage that too (much to
