Andy Reading 10k    Sunday  10th December  2006

Nick Cook writes:

I ran the Andy Reading 10k yesterday – it was a bit of a trek up to Bicester, but a friend of mine who lives there wanted to do it and it’s advertised as a flat course ideal for PBs, so I thought I’d have a crack at my PB!

The Rosemary Conley Christmas party the night before probably wasn’t the ideal preparation, but I decided to drive there so that I wouldn’t drink too much, and that was a wise decision!

It was a nice morning and I was feeling good after a couple of quite fast runs (for me!) during the previous week. I got there in plenty of time for a good warm-up and stretch and was raring to go when we were shepherded from a sort of ‘holding’ field to the start. A pistol shot start made us all jump and we were off!!! A 4:42 first k was quite fast for me, but I was feeling ok so tried to keep to that pace. At 8k I was just over 38 minutes, which is still a good time for me, but a PB was going to be close!!! At 9k I tried to up the pace a bit and finished in 47:50 according to my watch - 26 seconds outside my PB, so my club championship time won’t be affected.

The course was nice and flat, just 2 small humps over the motorway to give a bit of a contour. A part of the course was round an airfield and it was quite open and windy on that stretch, so that probably slowed me down a bit.

There was a water station at 5k and water at the end. The memento was a Coventry Building Society key ring (their main sponsors), so that was different. The Runners’ World web site advertised hot bacon sandwiches after the run, and I had assumed that meant they were free for runners – I was very disappointed to find that they weren’t when I got back – and I’d left my money in the car, so I had to go without!!!

The results are up on their web site now, and my official time was 47:37, so only 13 seconds outside my PB – I’ll try to get that down for the club 10k in January!!!!

Epsom 10 Mile   Sunday  19th November  2006

Simon Cutmore writes:

Epsom 10 miles Sunday 19th November

The forecast was for a wet breezy day, yet in the event, it was glorious sunshine and around 6 degrees. I did not see any other WVR runners

The course was undulating to hilly, all road taking in the "posh houses" around Epsom and the first half to around four miles was taxing on the calves as it involved a long slow ascent. The second half was much faster,  culminating in a great view over the downs as the last mile came down past Tattenham corner.

Nice medal, good organisation and a small but friendly turnout of around 350.

Marlow Half Marathon   Sunday  5th November  2006

Chris Dent writes:

It was a cold, but bright start to the day, the great pre-race debate being whether it was vest only or should we wear T shirts underneath.? With the sun shining and the temperature lifting I think most of us made the right choice.

We were ushered out to the start with precision timing and the launching of traditional starters firework rocket (wait for the bang) saw us away on the stroke of 9.30.

Katie declaring
that she was out for a “social run” I decided to try and latch onto her. I was helped in this cause due to her 3, yes 3! Shoe lace stops. Perhaps we should teach her the art of tying double bows!!. Chasing her all the way I thought there was a chance I might get the better of her for once but unfortunately lost contact on the last hill at 10.5 miles. With the downhill last mile I just managed to duck under 1.40 (another 10 year best). Another long sleeve T shirt for the drawer. With this one out of the way I now look forward to the flat Gosport Half in a fortnight.

With the aid of the family Williamson and Ian Lee-Emery the men finished a creditable 8th club team. Our ladies picking up the 9th club team spot.

Congratulations to Anne-Marie McLaren on her debut Half  Marathon. (Anne-Marie, you could have chosen an easier one you know!)

There were 884 finishers.

Peter Driver Memorial 10K

On the day when most runners were converging on Portsmouth for the Great South Run I decided to try the Fleet 10K.
This event being organised by Fleet and Crookham A.C. 2 lap courses are not the most favourable but 10K is 10K however it is run!.

Just the 3 of us from Windle Valley this week.
The forecast was for heavy rain, but fortunately the weather was kind to finishers under the 1 hour mark because it then bucketed down for the rest of the day.

After my much improved 10 mile time last week in the Cabbage Patch I produced another 10 year best,
getting the better of Richard for the 2nd week running. I’m sure he will be rectifying that situation in the not so distant future.

9 Windle Valley members took the trip down the M3 to Twickenham for this very popular and fast 10 Miler.
Organised by the Stragglers this was the 25th running of this event.

The weather was dull but quite warm and comfortable for racing.
The route took us along the Thames and over Kingston Bridge.
We then headed back along the other bank past Petersham to Richmond Bridge
where we crossed the river again to head back to the finish at York House.

There were 1396 finishers with the men finishing 51st team of 121 and the ladies finishing 17th of 93 teams.
With only 3 scoring for both men and ladies we only able to field two scoring teams.

Congratulations to Chris Peppiatt, she is making a habit of getting into the money.

Legoland 10k           Sunday  15th October  2006

Nick Cooke writes

The day dawned a bit grey on Sunday morning, but the forecast was good, so we were looking forward to a nice day. My daughter and her friend were going into Legoland on the half price tickets available to runners (but didn't want me in there with them - so I went straight home after the run!!).

There were a few WVR runners there – I saw Christel and Sarah before the run started. There was a warm up run by a local Rosemary Conley instructor which was a nice diversion while waiting for the start, and at 10 o'clock on the dot we were off round the Legoland car park before heading off into the Crown Estate forest.

The trails in the forest were a bit muddy in places, but not as bad as I had feared after all the rain we’d had during the week. I didn’t remember it being quite as hilly as it was either, one particular steep downhill slope followed by a long uphill stretch was extremely telling on the legs!!!

The last hill up to the finish was remembered though, and it was just as hard as ever!!! I was a bit disappointed with the drinks station half way – there was no water there as I went past – they were struggling with the numbers, and some of the marshals were a bit sour faced – I’m used to having clapping, smiling marshals giving encouragement to the runners!!

I finished in 51.17 by my watch, which wasn’t too bad considering the hills – official times will be up on their web site later in the week.

Despite this race clashing with the Tough 10 at the Look Out, Windle Valley were well represented with 6 Gentlemen and 8 Ladies. With only 134 finishers in total it was great to see the mass of green WVR vests charging around the familiar roads of Camberley.

With good strong runs from Dave and Keith the men were unable to match the magnificent performance of our ladies who repeated last years honours by taking 1st Ladies team prize.

Come on, lets see if we can increase the numbers next year ?

By looking at the entry list its going to be a good WVR turn out for the Cabbage Patch 10 mile on 15th October.

Newbury Triathlon                       3rd September  2006

Nick Cook   reports:

Newbury Triathlon this weekend. Sorry I didn’t make the club 10k last week – I’d had calf trouble again and didn’t want to aggravate it before this tri!!

I like this tri, it’s the second time I’ve done it – the swim is 4 lengths of a 75 yard outdoor pool (approx 300m) with swimmers going off in pairs every 30 seconds. It’s quite a wide pool, so there’s plenty of room. The person I was supposed to be swimming with didn’t turn up so I had even more room than most.

After the swim I ran off to transition and seemed to spend even longer than usual messing about with towel, socks, shoes, cycling gloves, etc., even got heckled by a marshal for putting on socks!!!! I did remember to put my glasses on this time though! Got overtaken by quite a few people here – must try and improve my technique in transition!!!

On the bike (22k) I overtook a few people in the first few hundred yards and then tucked in behind a bloke who seemed to be going about the same speed I wanted to go. I was a bit concerned about drafting penalties so when I got too close to him, I pulled out a bit just in case! We both overtook loads of cyclists during the first half of the course and then he pulled away from me on a long uphill stretch just after the half way mark. I had a bit of trouble with rain during the ride, couldn’t see a thing – perhaps I should have kept my glasses off after all! I might experiment with throw-away contacts before next season. I passed quite a few people mending punctures too, whereas before I’ve only encountered one or two. Perhaps the road surface wasn’t very good here.

Got back from the ride after overtaking more on the back stretch, and set off for the 5k run. Legs a bit wobbly after the ride but settled into a regular (slow) pace. One of the blokes I overtook on the ride went past me early on, but then I passed quite a few as my legs gradually recovered and was able to pick up the pace a bit. I also passed the bloke I was following on the bike, but he was hobbling now.

Finished with a bit of a spurt as I was feeling quite good, and even got some applause as I came in – a good crowd of spectators at this event. I came 26th out of 70 in the over 40s group, I’ll be in the over 50s next year, so was quite pleased with that result, being one of the oldest in that group. Overall results aren’t up on the web site yet, but checking through all the age group results, I came 103rd out of 361 finishers. Not sure about the accuracy of the timing or distance though – official results say I did the 5k run in 21.50 – I’ve never run that fast before!!!!

Got a nice tee shirt and water and a banana after the race, so all-in-all a good result and a very well organised race. I will certainly do this tri again next year.

Concorde Triathlon                       20th August 2006

Nick Cook   reports:

I took part in the Concorde Triathlon at Bradfield College Reading on Sunday along with Barry from WVR.

It was my first tri of the year, my honourable intentions of doing 6 this year going up in smoke when I got a place in the London Marathon. The training for that rather scuppered my training plans for swimming and cycling, and my wife had had enough of my going out on Sundays doing long runs!! My next tri will be Newbury on 3rd September.

The weather was bit dark and gloomy when I got up early on Sunday morning and made my way along the M4 to junction 12 and followed the convoluted route that took me to the car park avoiding the tri cycle route. The field/car park was pretty wet and I only hoped it wouldn’t rain too much over the next few hours so I wouldn’t get bogged down!

I found the entrance to the transition area and had my number marked on my arm and calves (they were still there on Tuesday!) and was pointed towards the racks where I could deposit my bike and gear. I’d taken a large golf trolley bag to keep all my stuff dry – I must get a big plastic box that quite a lot of competitors seem to use! I familiarised myself with all the exits and entrances to the transition area and then went off to find the way into the pool. There was quite a lot of activity by the organisers still, and the first lot of competitors were starting to queue up for their 400 meters swim. I wandered back to transition, and started to get ready and lay out all my stuff for when I came out the swim.

I was feeling quite confident of a good swim after doing lots of swimming while on holiday, and I started off strongly and soon overtook one of the blokes in my lane. During my 5th length a girl went haring past me and then slowed right down!! She was going slightly slower than I wanted to go, but not slow enough that I could overtake, so I settled into a pace just behind her. After counting 14 lengths I was expecting the float indicator to say I’d just got 2 lengths to go, but no float!! I queried this with the counter, but was told I’d only done 12!!! Ah well, I know I sometimes lose count doing lengths, so I took her word for it. Coming down the last length, I made sure there was no-one coming up my lane and then overtook the girl in front. Shouted out my number to the marshals as I headed back to the transition area, and started to get ready for the 20k bike ride. Dried my feet and hands, got socks, shoes, number belt, gloves and helmet on, and then headed towards the exit with my bike. Got to the mounting area and realised I’d forgotten to put my glasses on!!!! Ah well, never mind, I can just about see without them, so carried on.

The bike ride has always been my best part of a triathlon, and I passed quite a few people on the way without being overtaken myself. The marshals were all very friendly and encouraging (even though I could barely see them!!!).

Got back into the transition area, racked my bike, took off my helmet, AND PUT MY GLASSES ON!!!! Headed off the 5k run, taking a cup of water from the drinks station positioned just after the start.

I had quite slow run compared with the tris I did last year, and my running seems to have gone downhill since doing London – must get back into regular training!!! I overtook a few people on the run and was overtaken by a similar number. The finish was a welcome sight and congratulations from the marshals were welcome as I was handed my goodie bag with a drink and a banana.

The results were up on the TVT web site quite quickly and I found I’d finished in 166th position out of 361, so was very pleased with that. I’ve included mine and Barry’s results below.
If any WVR runners have thought about doing a triathlon, I would thoroughly recommend it as an interesting option to just running.

Nick Cook   reports:

Ok – let’s get the excuses out of the way first! I hurt my Achilles tendons 3 weeks ago playing 5-a-side football. I rested for a week, ran again and aggravated the situation, so rested for two weeks before last night’s race (apart from swimming and cycling). In fact, they were alright last night, but I was worrying about them as I ran. I also think cycling 32 miles on Tuesday probably wasn’t a good idea, and it was my company’s monthly pizza day on yesterday, so I had pigged out on pizza at lunchtime!

It looked like being a nice evening for a run, the weather had been good for a few days and it looked like continuing, however, as we all lined up at the start, the black clouds developed and rumbles of thunder could be heard!! It wasn’t long before a few drops started falling and murmurs of ‘hurry up’ could be heard amongst the runners. As the hooter went for the start the heavens really opened, and it wasn’t long before we were all soaked and dodging the puddles. Fortunately it only rained for about 5 minutes and then cleared up nicely.

There was a good turnout of WVR runners, and I met up with Chris D, Chris P, Colin and Geoff and there were more of our green shirts dotted about the field. There were also some WVR spectators too – it’s really good to have some cheering on the way round – so thanks for that!

I was hoping for sub-48 time, but because of my excuses above (or because I was crap!!) (Am I allowed to say that? – possible censorship), I recorded a time of 50:44. Official times aren’t up on the web site yet, but it’ll be somewhere close to that.

It was a well organised (and popular – it was full, so no entries on the day) race, and another medal to add to the collection. I’ll look forward to the July one when I’ll prepare properly and hopefully get that sub-48 time!!

Chris Dent   reports:

A small contingent of WVR’s made it to the first of this Summer’s mid week races. If anybody has done these before then they will know its not just 5 miles but more like 5.5m. Add the major hills and your expected finishing time is about your 10Km road time.

We were told at the start to expect a bit of mud, that was good news as I had decided to wear my Walsh studded trainers. A little bit of mud !! that was an understatement, seeing Mark Coxhead on the first lap go sprawling in front of me as he thought he would test the depth of the puddles. The conditions were more reminiscent of a full blown mid winter cross country race than that of a summers evening jaunt around the woods.

Dawn Straker led the club home, going from strength to strength, Well done Dawn! (an improvement  of some 8 minutes from the corresponding race last year), followed by yours truly, Bridget Morris and Chris Peppiatt.

I appreciate this race was the day after Wendy’s 3 Day Event Hill Run (Mark did both) but can we see more Windles at Race 2 -  June 28th and Race 3 – July 26th.

Hook 10       Sunday     May 21st  2006

Ian Lee-Emery   reports:

Hook 10

I arrived in plenty of time for this race, which for reasons I’ve not discovered, I’ve always found challenging.
So challenging in fact that I’ve never really felt I’ve run the race well.
The long hill up the road between miles 2 and 3 really sap the legs and another hill through Rotherwick village is a long, long country mile.

However this year I’ve been running well and have taken 7 or 8 minutes off my Half time compared to last year so I arrived a little nervous of breaking that good running streak.

I was greeted with light drizzle, which suits me fine and assembled at the start with the others running the 10.  They’ve introduced a six mile version this year and these folk lined up behind us.  The warm up from the fitness instructor was greeted with cheers as she fell over on a hill of wet grass while trying to encourage us to star jump or something similar!  The race got away on time and at a great pace – I was looking for 1:12:30 or thereabouts and going for an average of 7:15 per mile.

A lady runner from Hart was breathing down my neck for the first few miles and pulling away from me on the flat and up hills – however on a downhill she couldn’t keep up and after a to-ing and fro-ing for 5 miles I broke away from her and vowed to keep her behind me for the rest of the race.  I knew she was close as the different marshalls kept informing her that she was the second lady – I could see the first some 50m ahead of me.

I was joined by another runner and started up a conversation as the wind drove the rain horizontally across the road on the other side of Rotherwick – he was going for 70 minutes and I decided to try to stay with him and have him drag me round the next 4 miles to the finish.  The most boring mile is between 6 and 7 – flat, straight and featureless.  He stopped at a water station and I decided to press on and build a gap while I could.  Mile 7 to 8 is a gentle down hill along dual carriageway – not a lot of fun but I’m better at going down hill than up and made the most of it.  He finally caught me with half a mile to go and I came in at 1:11:20 (a pb) and yes I did keep in front of the 2nd lady.

Hogsmill Ladies 5 mile

WVR ladies turned out in force for the Hogsmill five mile run today ( May 7th ) .

As with last year the race was a flat , well organised family run with a superb bum bag and  goodies for all finishers this year

The day was dull but warm as the 9 Windle Ladies made their way to Epsom , after the childrens races - congratulations to Dawn's son Ryan who came 4th in the under 11's -- and the mass warm up-- over 200 women took to the roads and parkland . Soon the course was flooded with our green vests we definately seemed to have the most runners in one team !

Congratulations go  to Dawn who stormed home first lady for WVR and well done to all the other ladies who supported the club , Chris P, Bridget, Christelle , Sara, Karen , Sue , Sarah and myself

It really is a very friendly run so perhaps next year we can flood the course with even more green vests - come on you ladies !

Well Done  !

Woke up…to drizzle. Great!! – I thought it was supposed to be a nice day?? Decided that just a vest would be ok, but took a set of clothes to change into afterwards in case it didn’t clear up. Got to the Electricity Board offices only to be directed to the overflow car park – over a mile away!! Fortunately I had my golf waterproofs in the car, so I didn’t get too wet walking back to the start.

Headed straight to the loo queue which wasn’t too long, and didn’t appear to be too busy right up to the start. Found a stall selling tee shirts and decided to buy one with all the runners names on – I thought that maybe it would be a bit too cold for just a vest (I needn’t have worried – it wasn’t too cold). Found the changing rooms and baggage store – didn’t have to queue up too long. Started warming up and bumped in to Chris Dent – also saw Chris Peppiatt, Dawn Straker and Mark Coxhead from WVR
.
Wandered over to the start and got quite close to the front, so my watch time was very similar to the clock time. Started off at quite a fast pace (for me), 15:30 after 2 miles!! The rain didn’t let up much all the way round, and it looked quite foggy at one stage (although I couldn’t see very much through the rain on my glasses). I finally slowed down at around 7/8 miles where there’s a slight uphill stretch as the route goes over the railway line.

Finished strongly though, to finish in 1:19:17 – a PB for me (but it is only my second 10 mile race). Got a nice red kit bag with a Mars bar at the end, and there was plenty of water on the route and at the end. Got my kit back from the baggage store without too much of a wait and changed into some dry clothes before heading back to the car. This is the only 10 mile race I’ve done, but I do enjoy it – and most of the route is where I do my lunch time running from work, so it’s very familiar to me.

I’d like to try some more 10 mile races, but I expect I’ll be back here again next year.

Fleet Half Marathon    March 19th 2006
Nick Cook  reports:

I ran the Fleet Half Marathon on Sunday as part of my FLM training, and although my time was slower than at Wokingham, I was quite pleased as I hadn’t tapered for it. My chip time was 1:51:03 and gun time 1:52:12. I had a bit of trouble getting there, what with road works in Wokingham and Fleet, but I had no trouble parking in the shopping centre, and from there just a short walk to the start. I met up with Chris Dent and Colin Woods and saw a few other WV runners too. Michael McClancey said hello as he went past me just after the start.

There were quite a few celebrities running too – I saw Geoffrey from London’s Burning while I was warming up and I passed Nicola Blackstock and Eric Pollard from Emmerdale. There were also a couple of other faces I thought I recognised, but didn’t know their names.

This was the first time I’d run Fleet and it was a bit more ‘undulating’ than I’d been led to believe – not as flat as Wokingham, so that was probably another reason for the slower time. It was a lovely day too, I had a tee shirt on under my vest, but it wasn’t really necessary.

There were plenty of water stations, but I missed some of the mile markers at the start, which possibly contributed to me starting out too quickly. The first marker I saw was at 3 miles, and my time was 23:45 – much too fast for me for a half marathon – I think I paid for that later!!!

It was a very well organised race – plenty of toilets, good baggage facilities, refreshment tents and a separate area for runners at the end with water and squash. And a very nice medal too!!!

I won’t be doing next weeks club run – I’ve got to do 18/19 miles for my FLM training, so my next race will be the Maidenhead 10. I’ll send in a report after that!

Wokingham Half Marathon    February 12th 2006
Nick Cook  reports:

Saturday night and it was freezing cold outside. The forecast was for rain tomorrow, but would they be right? Will I need warm clothes or wet weather clothes? Decided I’d wear a long sleeve tee shirt with my new WVR vest over the top. I put gloves and hat in the bag and left my rain top on the banister. Got up in the morning - and it was pouring.

Only living about a mile and a half from the start, I had intended walking, jogging and stretching my way there, but decided to drive to one of the car parks instead. Got to the start and wandered around looking for people I knew - a bloke from work was running, and many people from the Runners World forum were going to be there.
Saw a few of these and then went and got in a loo queue. Found the baggage tent, picked up my bin bag and got changed – it was relatively warm in the tent, so I didn’t want to leave – but I needed to get in that loo queue again. Got to the start, found a fellow forumite and waited for the hooter.

Started dead on time and removed the bin bag, set the stop watch going over the start and we were off!! Stopped about 200 yards further on at the bottle neck!!! The rain didn’t stop all the way round, but at least it was only drizzle and there wasn’t the bitter wind of last year. Glasses are a real pain the bum when out running in the rain – I had to keep wiping them on my shirt so I could see where I was going!!

I had decided that a steady eight and a half minute miling would be a good pace to stick to, and would get me a PB of 1:50. The first mile was 8:50, but that was ok and after that I settled down to a steady 8 minutes per mile, a bit faster than I had intended, but I was feeling good.

Started to slow down a bit at about 9 miles, but I was still on for a PB, so I just had to keep going. Passed the 12 mile marker still feeling good, so upped the pace a bit and went over the finish line at 1:47:23 – over 9 minutes better than my previous best at Windsor last September!!

I expect the official time will be a bit slower – but will still be a PB. Trudged down the lanes to pick up my medal (a good quality one here, too!), and then off to the hot drink queue – and very much needed that was too!! Back off to the baggage tent to get out of my wet kit and into dry shirt and track suit.

I was going to have a massage, but there were quite a few people waiting and only 2 masseurs, so decided to head straight off home for a hot bath. I saw a couple of WVR shirts, one in the baggage tent , but it was too crowded to get over to say hello; and another coming in just as I was leaving. I shouted some words of encouragement, but don’t think he heard me!

The official times are up on the website today, and the mine was 1:48:02, so with a PB at the club 10k a couple of weeks ago, I’m on for a better club championship time this year already. I’m doing the Maidenhead 10 on Good Friday to complete the set. There are chips at the Fleet and Windsor half marathons, so I might be able to improve on this weekend’s time at either of those (although Windsor is a bit ‘undulating’).
