Hayling Island 10    Sunday 28th  November 2004

Pam Berriman  reports

There were 6 WVR's in The Hayling Island 10 mile today and after a drizzly start it ended up just as drizzly at the finish !
The course was well marshalled but as with Gosport last week there seemed to be loads of cars in hold ups around the course.
They all appeared to be sat patiently  waiting ,except for one lady who  decided to ignore the
young policeman's up turned hand and mow me down instead !!
After a screech of brakes and a ticking off from the policeman ( the woman in the car not me ! )
I managed the remainder of the run -- it did put me off my stride though -- silly woman !

Anyway , 1st across the line for WVR was our Katie her time -70 mins 23 secs .Although ,
Katie was not too pleased as she was aiming for a PB, as the course is such a flat one - Next time Katie !

Richard Sherlock just pipped Dave Pearce and Gordon Trout at the finish with 72.53 (approx)
Dave and Gordon came in holding hands on 72 mins 56 secs . Well Done the lads !

I managed 82mins 30 secs  I was very  pleased with myself till I looked at my time for the
Tough Ten which was only 4 mins slower!

Last but not least was our Ginni  on 91mins ,Ginni was over the moon with this time  as it is her
1st race for many, many,  many months AND she managed to keep on running despite her bad back !
Well done Ginni. All the above times  are our own -- not the official times .
Kerry had to pull out of the run due to a bad cold - hope you are feeling better soon Kerry .

Thanks to Gordon for taking us down and for his selection of CD's , Katie however had a different view of all
the ageing hippies in the car , Quote " Windle Valley road trip with ' Golden Oldies ' -
- rather like an old peoples day trip to the seaside ! "  Its the train to the next race for you Katie Pearce !

Gosport Half Marathon    Sunday 21st November 2004

MichaelMacClancy  reports

Gosport Half Marathon, Sunday 21st November 2004

Pete Berriman and Michael MacClancy spectated at this event, held on a dull but dry November day.  The lack of sunshine wasn’t the only change from last year – the position of the start had been moved and the course slightly altered.  Still, the main advantage of this event from the spectator’s viewpoint – the multi-lap course – had been maintained.

We milled around a while with the runners before the start, wondering why it was delayed for 10 minutes, before judiciously moving to the side to avoid the stampede.  Then a gentle stroll took us down to the sea-front where we were able to watch everyone streaming past having completed the very short first lap.  Mary, Richard, Kevin, Chris, Kerrie and Pam all looked cheerful so we thought we’d take advantage of the race’s second advantage, a conveniently located café where, with thoughts of the energy being consumed by all the Windle Valley Runners uppermost in our minds, we tucked into bacon sandwiches and cups of tea.  Well, all those calories have to be replaced somehow, by someone!

Continuing our animated conversation about Billy Connolly (he’d been on the TV the previous night) we sauntered back to our vantage point where we were just in time to see the now rather less cheerful runners go down the sea-front for the second time.  We called out to them with what we hoped were words of encouragement although some of the reactions suggested a certain lack of appreciation!
Then we slowly walked the 300 yards back to the finish line, safe in the knowledge that we’d be there long before the runners had covered the final six miles on their circuitous route.  All our runners did very well and the finishing order was Mary MacClancy, Richard Sherlock, Kevin Pedley, Chris Dent, Kerrie Woods and Pam Berriman (times to be finalised).  There must have been a few season’s bests in among that lot.

Sorry, I don’t know much about the race itself, you’ll have to find someone who ran it!  Oh, but I did hear it was well marshalled, the medal was nice and the showers were hot.  And Mary’s £15 Argos gift token for being 4th Lady 35-39 was greatly appreciated – at least it will be when I think of something I can spend it on!

LORDSHILL 10 - Sunday 7th November 2004

Dave Ricards  reports

LORDSHILL 10 – Sunday November 7th 2004
(or, Saunders & Ricards hit Hampshire for Ten – Again!!)

The marketing says: “It is an undulating course, with a sharp rise at about 7 miles, but many have achieved a pb on this course.” Well, I agree with the first two parts of that statement – but a PB – only if it is your first ten miler!!

We were perfecting our Training Strategy, it had worked two weeks ago at the Fordingbridge 10 – lovely course, too good to miss – could it work again and what is this mystical plan – read on listeners, read on!

The Strategy – don’t run very far, for month’s, then no exercise for two weeks, then ZAP-POW, run a Ten Mile race – and it works!!

That plan worked for at Fordingbridge and strangely enough, after a two-week rest, we ran Lordshill – and loved it!

We had long since developed the ONE-STOP Strategy: ten minutes into the race we find somewhere to stretch out the legs, draw breath, discuss the weather, then away again. On this occasion, it meant that we were last – and the Sweep (on a bike) patiently waited for us.

Being at the back had one main disadvantage, having to listen to the diesel engine of the Meat Wagon a few yards behind us. It provided however, quite an incentive to speed up and pass that joy onto someone else, which we did soon enough.

Having passed a few people, Sara pressed on through the field at a quicker rate than the author could. The route trundled along country roads, through villages and past leafy glades, until about seven miles, and then THE hill kicked in.

As the climb intensified, I noticed that a queue of cars were developing ahead of me, thanks largely to one sparrow-like lady who favoured the centre running line on the narrow road – and would not move over.

Sara, amongst others, had to endure the fumes, until the traffic found a way around the said person.

Once the hill peaked, the route continued to “undulate”, with one or two flat stretches, put in just to make it feel a little easier. Clever ploy – which worked!

Race Verdict: Brill-yant, excellent Marshalling, lots of banter where req’d!

Next Year: You bet!

Thanks to: Lordshill Road Runners.

Marlow Half Marathon - Sunday 7th November 2004

Chris Dent reports

Marlow Half Marathon : Sunday 7th November 2004

On a damp and miserable November morning 6 Windles braved the conditions for what is
not the easiest of HMs on the circuit.
Why I chose this one as my comeback Half (my first for 4 years) I do not know !.
With 984 finishers this event is getting more popular year on year.
Taking into account the poor conditions I think we all were pleased with our performances.
Perhaps next year we can entice more from the Club to enter this challenging but well organised race.

Cabbage Patch 10 - Sunday 17th October 2004

Chris Dent reports

Cabbage Patch 10 mile : Sunday 17th October 10:00am

8 members from the club braved the cool conditions in Twickenham supported by Chris Peppiatt on 2 wheels.
With a field of nearly 1200 runners it took myself Kerrie, Colin and myself 30 seconds to get through the start.
Considerably less by our quicker trio.
I felt reasonably comfortable at an even pace of 8.00min/mile but dropped 2 minutes over the last
two miles-(Lack of fitness!!!), but still quite pleased with the time.
Congratulations to Geoff who improved on his PB.

   Legoland 10k - Sunday 17th October 2004

Nick Cook reports

I ran the Legoland 10k last week (17th October) which was my first ever 10k! I was hoping to include it as my 10k for the club championship, but unfortunately, it hadn’t been measured properly and it was short. The website has just been updated, and they say it was 9.5k. I finished 360th and my time was 51:21 minutes,

We had a nice day for it, the rain stayed off and it was a very picturesque course. There were a few hills with a real killer at the end, coming back into Legoland from the forest at the top of the hill, going all the way to the bottom and then back up again!! Although it didn’t rain during the run, it had rained a lot beforehand, and the tracks through the forest were very muddy with loads of puddles – it was more like a cross country run! I took my wife and daughter and we spent the rest of the day in Legoland using discounted tickets available to runners and their families. So all in all we had a good day!

Tough Ten - Sunday 3rd October 2004

The Tough Ten    Sunday 3rd October 2004

Pam Berriman reports:

Despite the prediction of rain , rain , rain for this mornings run not one drop fell until we were safely in
the car and going home !   It was a bit muddy underfoot in places but not too bad , as for the run WVR
were well represented with 2 ladies and 4 men-- names later !

Having not completed this run for at least 5years I had forgotten just how tough it gets !!
The first 5 miles were ok Kevins’ Tuesday runs had set us in good stead
– It was the last 5 miles, then I suddenly remembered why I haven’t entered for all those years !!
The 2 nasty hills just before 6miles were killers and then the few that scattered the remainder of the
course were pretty horrible too – but hey it is the TOUGH TEN after all !  I was feeling very tired and
it just made me realise I need to put a lot more miles in before I do the Gosport- just so I can actually enjoy the run !

Anyway it was a well marshalled course , thanks to our Michael (one of the marshals ) for his support on
route and also to Chris P who unfortunately has taken some photos. Thanks Chris!!!

So ‘Team WVR’ came through in this order
( the only times I know unofficially are Chris D 1hr 20 WELL DONE CHRIS! And myself 1hr 26mins and  I felt every mile of it too )

Kerridge Highclere 10k, Newbury, Berkshire
Sunday 5th September 2004.

Dave Pearce reports

The race was described by runners world as 'A top-notch multiterrain event run through the grounds of Highclere Castle', which it certainly was.
The Windle Valley crew knew from the start that the course was likely to be challenging from the long drive up through the grounds (a big steep hill) to the start, the castle.
The weather wasn't even in our favour, it was an extremely hot September morning, ironic considering the poor summer.
However the runners were not deterred, especially not first 10k timer Claire Parris who completed it in a very respectable ........
The course was fantastic, beautiful scenery, variety of surfaces (a mix of the castle grounds, tarmac, track, field and public road).
Certainly not a course for a fast time yet definitely worth it and as Dave would say 'you get a t-shirt', probably why he still started and finished despite being injured.
