Gosport Half Marathon 16th November 2003

Pam Berriman  reports:

What  a beautiful sunny day for a Half Marathon ! There was hardly a cloud in the sky and very little wind  as we set off to Gosport. Mary, Michael,  Ginni and myself met up with Chris Peppiat (looking very fit!) , Jenny Peppiat , Colin & Kerry Woods and  Richard Sherlock . A good turn out for WVR's.

Once again there where loads of runners ( at least 300 - I think) to partake in this very enjoyable flat run . The only down side for me is that it is twice around the same course.By 7miles I could have quite easily given up BUT - hey I didn't , despite it being my 1st half marathon for a year!

Mary Maclancy is just going from strength to strength, Mary came storming in with yet another PB at 1HR 33mins !! Well done Mary. Not far behind was Michael , followed by Jenny P, then Richard S, followed by Kerry W, then last again myself- but I did it !

So well done the ladies ! Thanks also to Chris P. and Ginni B  for there fantastic support 3 times along the route - Ginni  recommends the bacon butties from the Weyside cafe near the start ! But she wont be enjoying the butties next year - as she will be DOING the run !

A luvverly day out - despite my aches as I type !

Marlow Half Marathon  2nd November 2003

Ian Lee-Emery  reports:

Tough run on Sunday but feeling pretty pleased with myself none the less.
This is the first time that I have run the Marlow Half and following a brief chat with others
I got the strong impression that the hills on this route were not conducive for Personal Bests.

Nevertheless, I was determined to run to plan - 'Straight Eights' - 13.1 miles at 8 minute miles

giving a total time of 1:44:48 (which would be a PB by 1m12s).

Below is how I got on, mile by mile:

8:43 - aargh, the race starts up hill!!  putting me behind by approx 45s.  Plenty of time though to make it up
- How I dislike hill starts...Chat to Dave Pearce and he points out Brian Coleman ahead.

8:09 - better but still slightly off the pace - shoes full of water and horizontal driving rain and a few falling branches
have left me a minute to find

8:06 - pretty close to the pace but I can see a line of runners rising!  I note a runner in striped yellow and black
far ahead and decide that I will try to overtake him before the race is out.  But now 1m20s to find later!

8:47 - tough half mile climb.  Two minutes to find now but still feeling pretty good.  Course now more suited to
the wet section on a Tri!

8:15 - lots of short climbs and descents but still slipping back - now 2:15 to find!
7:19 - bit more like it gentle decline and finally warmed up - totally soaked though but only 1:45 off.
7:45 - feeling great and still chipping away at it, only 1:30 off at over half way.  Fellow runner says he drove
the circuit last week and it nearly put him off.  I ask him why and he tells me I have yet to see what the course
has to offer!

8:27 - long gentle incline but steep decline with a torrent of water rushing down the road - waste of a good hill,
back to 2 minutes again

9:37 - the penny dropped! 1 in 4 up hill for a mile I'm not sure I'd want to drive up this hill in this weather
unless it was in a 4x4 - lots of people walking and  I'm running past but not so you'd notice!, now close to 3:45
off the pace and decide that perhaps the PB is a little ambitious on this course at this stage.
But not walking - never have on a race and never will...golden rule.

7:50 - bit more like it on the table top - 3:30 off but I should still break 1h50 which is my 'must make' target for
all Half's this year, overtake the yellow and black clad runner from earlier

8:42 - final hill so the crowd tell me but now I have 4 mins to find and only a few miles to go!
7:58 - back to plan
7:10 - now on the first mile but descending 1:50 looks safe only being 3:10 off
0:35 - sprint the last few hundred yards shaving 15 secs.

No records at 1:47:30 but feeling a race well run!

Alice Holt 14th September 2003
MurrayW ilson  reports:

 Position = 58/442  Time = 44:18
The Alice Holt run, held in Forest just south of Farnham was held on a beautiful sunny day, perfect for running.
I was impressed with the organisation of the event and it was a very friendly, family run.  The run itself was described
as "undulating" which I now understand is runner's code for several short, steep hills, one long climb and a couple of
flat bits.
I really enjoyed it and did better than expected.  My wife Rhonda also competed and was dead chuffed in
coming in under 60 minutes for her first competitive run in about 20 years!  The event was rounded off by a picnic in the sun.
Murray also ran the Great South run

Hart Sprint Duathlon  25th August 2003

Michael MacClancy  reports:

Mary and Michael MacClancy were the only WVRs to participate in this year's
Hart Sprint Duathlon on the August Bank Holiday Monday.  It was an ideal day
for running and cycling and about 100 competitors were at the start line.
Mary was the third lady overall and won the ladies' veteran title, Michael
finishing just 2 seconds behind her.  Michael was later heard to complain
that it was unfair that Mary didn't have to change her shoes between the
running and cycling stages.  Mary countered by saying that it's about time
Michael learnt to tie his laces and realise that he should put on his
cycling helmet after his shirt.  Getting it wrong costs time!

Milland 6   3rd August 2003

THE MILLAND SIX (& 21km for some) – TOO HOT TO TROT?

Dave Ricards  reports:

“The nearest hospital is some way away” is the encouraging notice attached to this race! And so it was, on a summers morn, that Ricards set sail, to challenge this “scenic and undulating” course, with no hospitals nearby. I took the “no watch” approach, yes Tony (Sheridan), partly due it being from Runners World and partly for psychological reasons! We, all fifty of us, lined up behind a white line, under some shady trees.

The banter was well under way – “notice the absence of any Mountain Goats? They prefer an easier climb!” – when the Klaxon sounded. It took at least four seconds for us back markers to cross the start line. Off we loped, in the warm summer sun. At 30 degrees, the temperature was less (degrees) than some of the inclines! The terrain was varied – sand, rocks and even muddy puddles in places.

By the time we had completed the first mile, the race leaders had joined – and quickly passed us. Our first four miles were relatively shady, though the air remained warm. Thankfully, the hills eased as we reached a plateau of heathland – though the temperature increased considerably! As we ran downhill, through trees and shrubs (after around five miles), there came a break in the foliage – and a choice. Three routes lay ahead; two of which had Hazard Tape marking them! A few of the 21k runners joined us, & one took a left (not seeing the hazard tape to his right) four or five followed. Thankfully, it turned out to be correct. ‘A gentle amble home’ followed, with a few supporters shouting encouragement. Needing some recovery time, I stayed on for the Prize Giving – entirely bottles of wine!

Ricards Reflections: What a jolly nice day out, ideal for a picnic and a number of genuine Country pubs nearby. (Meets the criteria for a Windle social methinks!)

What a turn out this year ! 14 WVR in total ! A big congratulations to Rob Batchelor who came in 1st man !!
We all thought it was going to be a hot evening but in true Yateley 10k tradition

Well done to the ladies 5 turned out this year Mary 1st home for WVR in 43. 18 ( look out Michael she's on your tail!)

Woodland 5   May 28 2003

Michael MacClancy reports:

Race Report

After Wendy's 3 day event and the rigours of the hill run on the final day there were only three of us crazy enough to want to do it all again at Finchcoasters' first Woodland Five of the season.  Chris Dent joined us making a total of four WVRs in the event.  There is usually a bigger contingent from Windle than this, where were you all?

The route remained unchanged from previous years - two and a bit laps of a very hilly course through the woodland near Broadmoor Hospital.  Even though the distance is only five miles most people seem to take about the same time as a regular 10k and that was the case for us this year.

There are two more Woodland Fives this summer in the last week of June and the last week of July.  Why not come along for a run in the woods?

Logans Run     April 27 2003

Pam Berriman reports:

I have been meaning to do this race for a couple of years but something has always cropped up , it not only clashes with our 10k but the Bracknell half and others . So this year Chris Peppiatt, Richard Sherlock and myself represented WVR.
The race is ran every year in memory of Ian Logan who ran for AFD , sadly Ian was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1997 and died on the 15th August that same year .

His many running club friends decided to stage this event and ALL proceeds go to the PHYLLIS TUCKWELL HOSPICE in Farnham . Today less than 200 people turned out to complete the course, despite it being a very worthwhile and local event . Perhaps next year more WVR would like to take part and get loads of sponsors too ? Keep the last Sunday free next year and we could have a big team event .

I digress! It turned out to be a hot and windy day with a 12noon start - didn't like that bit! The course takes place in and around Rushmoor Arena and whilst it was good to be off the main roads , the race is ran on army track roads . It was quite undulating in parts and very twisty - turny too ! The whole 10k is several times around the same bits of the course which at times got a bit confusing !

On the whole not a particularly exciting run BUT the reasons for doing it make up for that !

Well Done to Richard who managed 46mins and Chris on her 1st 10k in ages and managed 51mins  and me a terrible 54 mins --- I need help !

Please remember this one for next year

Maidenhead Easter Ten  - Good Friday - 18 April 2003

Michael MacClancy reports:

A contingent of 9 Windle Valley Runners ran the Maidenhead Easter 10 on Good Friday.
The start was a bit confused because we couldn’t tell which direction we were going to go
off in and we had to shuffle backwards and forwards to get everyone behind the line.
The course is very flat, predominantly rural and mostly traffic-free,
only a short section being on a pavement.
The warm weather made the run a bit hot for some although there were plenty of drink stations.
Mike Hopkins was first WVR home.
Dave Pearce was very happy with his 1:18:19 and is hoping that this bodes well for
the Stratford Shakespeare Marathon next week.
Colin Woods was stretching his legs after the London Marathon and paced Kerrie
all the way to the line.
Unfortunately Chris Dent has been suffering from a trapped nerve in his back
and had to walk part of the course.  Still, it was a nice day to be out for a walk!
Facilities at the start and finish were ideal and Mars had donated some of their
famous bars to aid the runners’ recovery!

The men’s team came 23rd but the ladies managed a very respectable 6th

Woking Ten  30 March 2003

Woking Ten Ten, 30th March 2003

Well, Windle Valley are clearly a bright lot as everyone managed to move their clocks in the right direction, and make the 9:30 am start.  And keen, with everyone opting for the 10 miler rather than the 10k.

Cool, overcast skies with little wind made conditions perfect.  We started bang on time in a light industrial area, before heading past houses and into the countryside.  The course was on roads and cycle tracks with minor undulations, and although traffic was not shut off there was plenty of room, aided by good marshalling.  After 7 miles, we merged with the back end of the 10 k runners for a repeat half lap to the finish at the Woking Athletic Track.

The results include a host of PBs – Miles, Mike, Geoff, Mary, Tony … plus probably others I can’t remember !  Truly excellent.

Tony Sheridan reports:

The Windle Valley diehards who took part in the Finchcoasters tough 10 event today did well
The weather was sunny and mild
Kevin Pedley lead in at around 75mins, I had him in my sights for the whole of the race and struggled in a minute later.
Dave Pearce stormed in around the 79 mark and our one and only lady Janice Tweed romped home in the 83rd min

The field was about 70 all told and as expected fairly hilly and muddy but a very enjoyable race

Reading Half Marathon 9 March 2003

The Reading Half Marathon
Sunday 9th March 2003
The greatest of the established "pre-London" Half Marathons, the Reading Half Marathon falls an ideal five weeks before the April 26 miler around London. In fact, whether or not you plan to run in a spring marathon, this 13.1 miler that runs through the heart of Reading town, is such a good event anyway, that anyone who wants to experience that feeling of being in a mass participation event with huge crowd support - and have the opportunity to raise money for charity as well - ought to give it a go!  The event will be the first in the 2003 Premier Series of events, closely followed by a number of major events with whom Reebok have partnered throughout 2003 - and all over the country.

Mary MacClancy  reports:

It has taken some time to finalise the results for this race (apparently due to unnumbered competitors) - hence the delay in writing the report. Otherwise the race was once again very well organised with plentiful parking, facilities, marshals and a nice fairly flat course. I didn't manage to catch Fiona Bishop from Woking but still just managed a P.B. Excellent value at £5 with a lovely blue t-shirt for free. So why did only 5 Windle Valley runners take part? Hopefully we can encourage some more for next year.

Adidas Training Camp, 31st Jan – 2nd Feb 2003

Miles Cudmore   reports:

A group of Windle Valley Runners and Datchet Dashers headed to the Forest of Dean at the end of January to join an Adidas training camp run by Trailplus.  Although aimed at London Marathoners, it would be excellent for those tackling any distance, and caters for  all abilities.  The camp had about 40 runners led by 4 very experienced runners whose enthusiasm and knowledge was outstanding.

After introductions and pub trip on Friday evening, we rose early on Saturday for a pre breakfast 5 k light run – very pleasant.  In late morning we had our first full session looking at threshold running (85% effort or just under 10 k pace) with 2 x 10 min stretches interspersed with light running.  The afternoon session covered fartlek and “Kenyan hills” where you loop continuously up and down without stopping for period of time.  Good but painful !!  Between sessions we had excellent lectures demonstrating sports massage, stretching, training types, nutrition etc.

Sunday brought the “long run” – we could all chose whether to cover 1 hr, 90 min or 2 hr and by making front runners loop back, everyone kept together.  Going through the forest was super – even if Wendy was nearly flattened by half a dozen deer which came flying through the trees !!

I would certainly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about running and how to train.  Other benefits included some super deals on kit, and the chance to review individual training plans with the instructors.  There are several more are more camps this year – see http://www.trailplus.com/running.htm for details.
