Letter from Sydney - Aquathon + Triathlon in Oz      February 2003

Jo Smith reports

Hope everyone is well and the rain is not getting too much back in England.  In fact we are praying for rain here in Oz - we are in a serious drought and even though it rained a bit yesterday afternoon - it was not enough to make a difference.  40,000 people have lost their jobs in the farming industry because of the drought conditions which also leads to bush fires.  It's not all paradise living in Australia!

I have been working, training, working, training!  Although the fitness convention, FILEX, is not until June, it is just so busy with the marketing, booking venues, organising the presenters (135 of them!) and setting up the systems and promotional material - the list is never ending.  I am also working on the November Convention - Network 03 which is taking place in Melbourne.  Went there the other day to look at venues - hopped on the plane, looked at about 4 venues and hopped on the plane back to Sydney - it was a flying visit, literally!

I finally put my training to use and completed my second Aquathon on Friday 31 Jan, which is organised by the triathlon club I belong to.  It is a 300m swim and a 3km run - short but fast!  Ben did it with me the previous week and we will do it again in a couple of weeks - the last one of the season.

I then did the club triathlon on Sunday morning (400m swim / 15km bike / 4km run).  It was hard but really enjoyed it.  Only down side was that it started at 6.30am - ugh!  Was a beautiful time of day though - the swim was on a secluded beach - the sun was just rising and was bright red, the sea was like a millpond and crystal clear.  When we were swimming, you could see fishes swimming underneath you!  But from the beach we had to run up about 50 stairs to get to the bike transition area on the road - a killer!  The bike was quite hard as they threw in a couple of hills and we had to do 5 laps.  The run was two laps cross country along the headland by the water - a ! great course.  I was pleased with my time of 1 hour 3 mins 59 secs - 6th lady in (21 took place) and 48 out of 70.  The women started first and the men started once the last woman had finished the swim.  So now I know the course and I am going to do the next one in March (and last of the season) and reduce my time even more.

Then it will be the Club Champs in May in Port Stephens - a longer, harder course but a great weekend away.
