2002 Triathlon in Sydney       24 March 2002

Report from Jo Smith, our Sydney Correspondent

Date:              Sunday 24th March 2002

Location:         Kurnell, Sydney

Just to let you know that I had the most fantastic time on Sunday morning as I finished my first Triathlon.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait until the next one.

The weather conditions were perfect in Kurnell (about 30 mins south of Sydney).
We swam 500m in Botany Bay, 20km cycle on flat roads with only a couple of little hills and ran 5km through Botany Bay National Park which was beautiful but hard with a couple of nasty hills in there.
My swim was the slowest but I made it up on the cycle and my strongest leg was of course the run.

I went with a couple of friends who competed too and it was great as I knew a few people there from the Tri club and just round and about so I felt a part of it all.
My friends Becky and Jean-Marc came to support me too and I had lots of good luck messages so I was set to go!

There are a mixture of competitors in this one from the elite triathlete to the complete beginner (like me!) - there were 1030 mad people taking part and I was in the 4th band age group (25-29 - just!).  My results were:

Finish Time:     1 hr 17 mins
Overall place:  710/1030
Swim:     13 mins
Overall swim place:   809
Swim place in category:   51
Cycle:  41 mins
Overall cycle place:   699
Cycle place in category:   42
Run:   22 mins
Overall run place:  620
Run place in category:   31

So my next one is on the 28th April in Darling Harbour in Sydney.  It has shorter distances (300m swim, 15km bike and 3 km run) so will be a fast one.  Think I could be addicted.

Having a day off today but back to training tomorrow and then 4 days in Melbourne.  I have decided to make the most of my 4 days off over Easter and I haven't been to Melbourne.  So I am catching a lift with a friend down there (8 hour drive) and staying in a hostel.  I will be catching up with a friend I met back in UK and hopefully going to the surfing championships in Torquay of all places!  It is meant to be a great spot and a great event - think there will be lots to see if you know what I mean!

So I'm off for now.
