Presentation Evening 2001

Carl Webb

Phil Morley made the following speech thanking Carl for all his hard work over the last 11 years

This next award is for someone you all know very well, and who has been instrumental in the shaping of the club.

His first club meeting was in the Brickmakers Arms on 2nd August 1989. It was there, with 6 others that he was responsible for setting up a new running club, the Windle Valley Runners, and he was going to be the Club Secretary. He is, of course, one of the younger members of the Webb dynasty – Carl Webb.

I have known Carl since I joined the Club 10 years ago, when he was then a young 25 year old. Even then he was playing a major part in running the Club. As well as being Club Secretary, he was writing for the quarterly Club Newsletter, organising events and putting in some very respectable race times.

Carl even appeared on BBC Television in September 1991 along with our President  Peter Dimmock, at a Charity Relay held at Ascot racecourse.

In the early years Carl was studying up in Sheffield, but all the while he was still involved in Club events, running with us in Windlesham in his holidays, and sending us Race Reports from up North in term time.

In 1992, Carl was posting some quick 10k times with a PB of 39:01 in the Yateley 10k. To give you some idea of Carl’s dedication to running, he ran in 8 races in just two months, in February and March of that year, one of which was a Half Marathon .

Having left Sheffield, Carl became even more involved in the running of the club. In the mid nineties he was not only now writing for the Newsletter but editing it and producing it, a full time job in itself. Carl was organising the Fun Run, the Relay Marathon, 10k timings, the results of the Club Championships, as well as having an active role on the committee as Club Secretary. He was instrumental in organising the Club clothing, that members wear at events. In fact, in the latter years of his tenure as Club Secretary, the club would have come to a grinding halt without his services.

During all of this time, Carl was also indulging in his other passion, that of golf. Towards the end of the Nineties, as well as all his Windle Valley work, he was Mens’ Captain in his section at Sunningdale Golf Club.

Speaking of passion, it was around this time that we had a new lady member join us, Jenny Viner. It soon became apparent that the two had more than an interest in running together, and were soon to be married. One thing led to another, and in February last year, our youngest member of the Windle Valley Runners, Hallam, was born.

By now Carl had been Mr Secretary and Mr Everything else in the club for 11 years, and he also had a life at home to consider. It was no surprise to us all when he decided to withdraw from the day to day running of the club, and devote more of his time to his family. However Carl and Jenny are still running, and are often to be seen on Sunday mornings at Windsor Great Park, with Hallam being pushed around in his High Tech pram.

In the past, the club has probably not given Carl the recognition that he properly deserves. Therefore, on behalf of the Committee and all of the Windle Valley Runners, I would like to genuinely thank Carl for all his sterling work over the last 11 years. We are really grateful for all he has done, and the club would not be in the shape it is now, without all of his hard work.
