World champion Abel Anton was just two seconds outside the course record
as he won the men's race in two hours seven minutes and 56 seconds.
The Spaniard passed Abdelkar El Mouaziz of Morocco,
who had lead for much of the second half of the race, in the last half mile.
El Mouaziz held on for second place ahead of last year's winner Antonio Pinto of Portugal,who was third.
Olympic champion Josia Thugwane pulled out early on with hamstring trouble.
Catherina McKiernan won the women's race in magnificent style after leading alone for the last five miles
and sprinting in the closing stages.
McKiernan, the favourite despite being only her second marathon,
finished in two hours 26 minutes and 25 seconds.
The 28-year-old from Ireland broke free from a group of stars on approximately
17 miles and surged past the early surprise leader Adrian Fernandez.
Scot Liz McColgan was second in two hours 26 minutes and 54 seconds.
